Route

Ottheinrich's journey is a strain. With his entourage of about fifty, he covers a distance of a respectable 2200 kilometers in the middle of winter, on snow-covered roads, and passes through more than two dozen dominions along the way. On November 27, 1536, he set out from Neuburg. He covers the distance of about 880 km to Krakow in less than 4 weeks. After leaving Krakow on January 17, 1537, he is documented as passing through Wittenberg on February 11/12, 1537. In the last days of February he is back in Neuburg on the Danube.
The travel locations shown in Ottheinrich's album probably correspond exactly to the night quarters, which were about 40 kilometers away on a day's ride. However, not all overnight stops were obviously taken into account; on the other hand, places were also included that must have been recorded for other reasons, perhaps because special journey events were associated with them.
In choosing his route, Ottheinrich was not only guided by major long-distance trade routes such as the Golden Road to Prague or the High Road through Silesia. To keep travel costs as low as possible, he apparently traveled eastward on his own territory for as long as possible at first and then stopped wherever possible at friendly neighbors' and relatives'.
